Inverness travel agency Murray Travel reassures cruise ship passengers over P&O layoffs

Murray Travel has reassured customers that P&O Cruises is a separate entity from P&O Ferries and that planned holidays will not be affected by the dispute.

An award-winning Highland travel agent has moved quickly to reassure cruise passengers that their holidays will be safe after news broke that P&O Ferries had made 800 of its staff redundant with immediate effect.

Murray Travel, which was recently named the UK’s Best Luxury Travel Agency at the 2022 TTG Luxury Travel Awards in London, responded to the news with a social media post stressing that P&O Cruises is a separate business and that its cruise ships would not be affected by the conflict.

“P&O Cruises is part of the Carnival Cruise Line group, which also owns Cunard, and has nothing to do with the ferry company,” the Inverness-based company wrote.

“Those who have booked P&O cruises need not worry – business as usual.”

The post concluded: ‘Our hearts go out to the 800 employees who were appallingly terminated without notice, and sincerely hope that the company in question will be held fully accountable for their inexcusable actions.’

Director Scott Murray, who runs the business alongside his wife Sarah, said that although Inverness Travel has not been approached by many anxious customers, he knows other agents have and that many concerns had been expressed and questions asked on online travel forums.

“We just thought it would be easier to fix the problem before it became a problem,” he said.

The concerns come as the world’s cruise industry recovers from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a recovery that is also set to be felt in the Highlands, with the port of Cromarty Firth anticipating a record cruising season .

“The whole travel industry is bouncing back,” Murray added.

“It’s pretty phenomenal, to be honest, and it’s been pretty comprehensive.”
