January 2022 US travel agency sales jump 187% year over year
Monthly international passenger trips increased by 120% compared to January 2021
ARLINGTON, Virginia, February 17, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released data showing that air ticket sales from ARC-accredited travel agencies totaled $3.6 billion in January 2022, a 187% year-over-year increase on the other compared to January 2021.* Total net sales mark a 17% increase month over month compared to December 2021, when sales were $3.1 billion .

The total number of passenger trips increased by 25%.
US domestic travel increased 21%.
International travel up 33%.

We expect the recovery to continue as more governments drop mandates and travel restrictions due to the decline of the omicron variant as well as a rebound in corporate ticketing,” said Steve Solomon, vice -President of Global Sales, Marketing, Operations and Customer Experience at ARC. “As we look to spring travel, some of the historically popular destinations are showing booking numbers closer to pre-pandemic years, and in some cases exceeding those levels.”
The total number of passenger trips settled by ARC in January 2022 increased by 106% year-over-year, from 7.9 million to 16.4 million. International trips jumped 120% to 5.4 million, while U.S. domestic trips nearly doubled their year-over-year total to 11 million. The average round-trip ticket price in the United States in January 2022 was $409, an increase of 22% from $335 in January 2021.

Findings are based on monthly sales data ending January 31, 2022, from 10,746 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printers and online travel agencies . Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.
The average ticket price (USD) is for a round-trip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only domestic travel within the United States.
Passenger trips include the total number of passengers making a trip from one airport to another using direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added and refunded trips are deducted to provide a clean view of passengers on the move.
US domestic passenger travel includes the total number settled through ARC when the itinerary is entirely within the US. International passenger trips include the total number settled through the ARC when all or part of the trip is to airports outside of the United States or originates from outside of the United States.
Total sales equals the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.
