NHS app crashes for five hours, causing chaos for Covid travel passes
The NHS app and website experienced another major outage yesterday, causing chaos for travelers trying to access their Covid Pass vaccination records.
Users trying to access their NHS passes online last night encountered an error message: ‘There are currently issues accessing the Covid pass on the NHS app and website. We are investigating the issue and will update as soon as possible.
The official NHS Twitter account then gave several assurances that the developers were working on technical issues with the website and app.
Shortly after midnight, the NHS tweeted: ‘We have identified the cause of the intermittent issues with the NHS COVID Pass and we are urgently working to resolve it. We apologize for any disruption caused by these issues.
The NHS website and app experienced another major outage on October 13, with the Covid Pass feature out of service for four and a half hours.
Some travelers have said they were unable to access their Covid vaccine certificates at the airport, where many airlines and destinations require you to show proof of vaccination before travel or at the border.
Travelers usually have a short window during check-in and security to show proof of vaccination, so outages of this centralized system lasting several hours could be a real problem for vacationers.
Double-bitten travelers can also download their Covid Pass to travel in advance, to avoid being caught off guard by digital issues like yesterday.
In October, journalist Caroline Frost said Sky News that she had missed her flight to France due to a technical problem.
“I had all these previous documents, but there was nothing they could do,” she said.
“It was a worthwhile moment. [The airline staff member] said “I sympathize, but there is nothing I can do.” She called her boss, there was nothing he could do.
“It was extremely frustrating and it felt like such a waste of money. And of course, when the application is operational, I will be the same person, I will be in the same conditions of eligibility vaccinated to travel.
The outage occurred shortly after Boris Johnson announced an increase in the use of vaccine passports, which will be needed to access larger events and nightclubs across the UK from next week.
