The new IATA Travel Pass revolutionizes the way we travel
With air travel comes the paperwork and with the paperwork comes the panic and inconvenience of making sure you have everything you need to make sure you don’t find yourself stuck in an airport like Tom Hanks faking a bad accent. This is especially true in the age of the coronavirus – which feels like a series of movies we absolutely would never watch – where many countries have different requirements for COVID-19 vaccinations and PCR testing. But as the old saying goes, “There is an app for it”, and in this case, that app is called the IATA Travel Pass. Additionally, the IATA Travel Pass has been officially recognized by governments and airlines around the world, with Saudi Arabia being the latest to join the ranks on August 18, 2021.
The IATA Travel Pass offers a global register centralizing all the information relevant to your trip. Passengers can find test centers and laboratories at their departure and arrival locations, and receive results directly on the app.
The app is based on a ‘sovereign identity’, offering passengers a digital wallet to store and manage all their travel documents such as biometric passports and certifications for COVID-19 tests or vaccines.
Emirates was one of the first airlines to test the IATA Travel Pass as early as January 2021, with success seen in March. More than 50 airlines have since joined the group, including Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways. So we’re not peddling a flash in the pan trend here. If there’s one thing COVID-19 has taught us, it’s that the system can always be a bit more streamlined to keep us from stressing out, and hopefully apps like IATA Travel Pass stick around for the long haul. . We don’t want to open fifty tabs just to find out how to get a PCR test again on time. Never again.
The IATA Travel Pass app is available for download on iOS and Android. You can check that your airline is participating in the trial and if they can provide you with instructions on how to use the pass.
