Urban Heartbeat: The black-owned travel company you should book in Australia
Australia is more than white surfer culture.
But you wouldn’t know that by doing a simple search online or browsing a hashtag on social media, because the majority of ads represent exactly that.
But Steven Bishop is trying to change that through his travel agency. He is the founder and one of the curators of Urban Heartbeat. It’s a black-owned travel company that showcases the things you usually do not see in Australia: Black-owned businesses, black culture and black history.
“There are so many misconceptions here, and one of them is that there is no black culture here,” he told Travel Noire. “Australia has sold itself to a culture of blond-haired, blue-eyed surfers. What is missing is the level of multiculturalism in places like Melbourne and Sydney. They are the two most ethnically diverse cities in the world. world.
Urban Heartbeat was born out of Bishop’s love of traveling to big cities, as they are a melting pot of culture, food, and tons to see.
He combined urban and heartbeat because where there is a heartbeat, there is life. It is also an indicator of how we feel.
“When you travel, you feel the energy and you feel the senses. This name came to me and it stuck with me. It reveals who I am and the kind of journeys I want to do with people,” says Bishop .
What Bishop offers that no one else in Australia offers is that his travels are all about exploring by going deeper into the local scene and getting to know the people. There is a particular focus on black Australians, Indigenousand other minorities.
“We are going to Black-owned businesses across Australia and then when we get to the Outback, we work with the Aboriginal guides who tell us the stories, learn about the land and the history that goes back thousands of years,” says Bishop. “It’s one of the most exciting experiences being able to bring people in and let them see for themselves to experience the oldest cultures in the world.”
Ten years from now, Bishop hopes Urban Heartbeat will be the go-to travel company people think of when it comes to exploring Australia’s diverse beauty.
“I see Urban Heartbeat setting the bar high for cross-cultural experiences and bringing people to understand different cultures through mutual respect and understanding,” he adds.
